Shoe Of The Week

Hey, hey and ‘mo hey! Howdy - do Closet Crew? Welcome back to Charlotte’s Closet’s January issue and what a glorious time to be alive! Baby, we have survived one ‘helluva year! As my sister from another mister, Ms. Celie says: “I may be poor ( I don't say that part), I may be black and I may even be ugly… but thank God I’m here.” I'm here and so are you!

It's 2021, ladies… and the category is SHOES! If you didn’t know, let me take a minute to tell you; I am a bonified Shoe-a-holic. This means that I understand the power of a good shoe. Your shoes can make or break your outfit. Hell, sometimes the shoes are the outfit! Shoes are my favorite addition to any outfit because they can change the whole vibe of the pieces. The right shoe can tell your story the moment you enter a room, without you ever having to have said a word. Shoes, shoes, shoes oh how I love thee! Even when you don’t love me back.

Several years ago, I had a freak accident, and it prevents me from being able to stand in heels anymore for long periods of time. This for damn sure hasn’t deterred me from buying them in excess. It’s like any other addiction, once a Shoe-a-holic, always a shoe-a-holic. Just because you keep telling yourself “no” doesn’t mean the shoe will stop calling. Shoes are relentless in their seduction.

I can remember being a teen, working odd jobs, and stacking my little coins just so I could run to Bakers and Joyce Leslie and blow my minimum wage check on shoes. Some I could afford and some I couldn’t, but it didn’t stop me from buying. Shoe stores were magical to me. I could spend all day in a store, and like a good Shoe-a-holic come back the next week to do the same thing and get a totally different experience from it every time. I live for the style of it…the ability to turn heads with just a few steps!

Now that I’m an adult now and can actually afford the same shoes I lusted after as a youth, the desire to spend thousands of dollars on them isn’t there, no matter how bloody the bottoms are. This isn’t to say that I don’t still chase that feeling that only stepping out in a killer shoe can bring. Remember what I said earlier about addiction?

In keeping with the category, I decided to pick 4 of my favorite shoes and build my looks for this month around these shoes. This was not an easy task, as I have a plethora of shoes and in my mind, I love them all. How could I narrow it down to four? It took me all of December to search my soul and my closets and I managed to narrow it down to these four – though I’ve changed my mind several times while writing this before I turned it in. I hope you love these shoes and looks as much as I do. Check ‘em out and tell me what you think?

DECEMBER ISSUE

Comfy, Cute, & Chic

Hey, hey… and ‘mo hey!

Welcome back to Charlotte’s Closet. The season is fall, and the category is Comfy & Cute. *Ned Stark voice* “Winter is coming,” but in the meantime, we can still get off some cute, yet comfortable fall looks. Just like everybody can’t fit into a size 6; there are some who really don’t do heels. That’s more than okay and shouldn’t stop you from embracing your fresh. Style is a personal choice, so your looks tend to pop more when you stick to what’s proven to work for you.

My ultimate fall look is a sweater dress. It is Comfy, Cute, & Chic at the same damn time. This winter white sweater dress, coupled with a kick-ass fedora - cocked just right - paired with my wedge. The Timberlands clearly say, “Fuck what they say.” Everybody has their own Cute & Comfy. This is mine.

When I really wanna take them to The King, I throw on a crop-top. You know they say that thick women can't wear crop tops, right? Obviously, they lied because I own a few. It’s not what you wear, but how you wear it. Free game.

Fall is a season of multiple colors, so the more popping the color, the more the look will stand out. I’ve always been a fan of a cool boot and sweater. High, low, combat, or bootie; you piece them together the right way and you’re cooking with gas. My Brooklyn; Style speaks for itself and my pink Timbs make me feel invincible!
