ENTREPRENUER ~ AUTHOR
Mom, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, award-winning author, poet & publishing coach.
5. How has your business evolved? What has changed?
My business has grown to international heights, and it has been largely due to understanding how to market online. I also automate much of my onboarding process with forms and things to kind of take me out of the equation. In the beginning, I didn't have that luxury, and I spent way too many hours working and not enough time running my business. I don't have to work as hard as when I first started, but now, it's just working to stay ahead of the competition.
6. Where do you see your business in five years?
In five years, I see myself having grown at least one of my newest ventures into a successful company.
7. How do you balance self-care, family, business, and writing?
I have a word count tracker that helps me keep my writing on track. If I miss days from writing, seeing it in print kicks me back into writing mode. As for my family, everything revolves around my kids and their schedules since I am a single parent. For self-care, I find time to do something for me at least once a week, whether it is just locking the bathroom door and taking a long hot bath, or locking my room door, stretching out on the bed and listening to some music for an hour. For business, I schedule everything, including clients. I set work hours so I'm not working all day, and put my phone on vibrate at night.
1. What drove you to become your boss?
I was tired of having to juggle being a mom with being an employee. I was tired of only knowing my work schedule, and not knowing what season it was. I wanted the freedom to be able to take my kids to school, pick them up, and just be that parent who was able to do things with their kids without limits. I worked as a certified nurse assistant for six years, and it just became very evident one day that working for someone else was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
2. What products and services do you offer?
I currently offer coaching and consulting services to authors. I have run an author services firm since 2005, and I will be officially 'retiring' from that component at the end of the year. I am building custom apparel and upcycled jewelry company as well.
3. How many hats do you wear?
I wear a lot of hats. I am a mom, an entrepreneur, a business owner, an artist, and an author. I have a lot going on, but I do my best to juggle everything. I have four children, which include twins who are in elementary school, a middle schooler, and a recent college graduate who is trying to find how she wants to apply her degree.
4. Tell us about some of the challenges you face as an entrepreneur.
One of the biggest challenges is staying relevant. For me, my niche is pretty crowded, and I find myself having to compete with a lot of 'newbies' and people who are just out to take an author's money without providing any real results. Trying to stay top of mind can be hard when there is so much noise, and for me, when it gets like that, I feel like finding something else to do.
8. Do you have any advice for people who want to become self-employed?
Being self-employed has its perks, but it doesn't come without challenges. I would say, make sure you have good self-discipline. It's easy to slack off once you realize that you are literally in charge of everything, from how much money you make to how many hours you will devote to working. Also, take your work seriously. If you treat your business like a hobby, it will pay you like one.
