How many hats do you wear?
As a new business owner, I wear the hat of every role in my business. I am the accountant, the marketing director, the social media manager, content creator, customer service, shipping and fulfillment, operations, and product development. Is it overwhelming? Yes, but I've been overwhelmed and burnt out at corporate 9-5 jobs (that required more than 8hrs a day) that had nothing to do with my purpose. I was miserable. I find peace within the chaos of running my business because I love what I do and I'm excited to learn new things to better it every day.
What inspired you to seek out this particular business venture?
I've always been a young girl who was fascinated with hair. My mother was a Dental Assistant by profession but on the weekends she would do hair. I would watch her transform these women and they would leave with an air of confidence after gazing in the mirror at the finished result. I had practiced on my doll babies so much and then myself that I eventually started doing my mother's client's little girls' hair.
I knew from that point I wanted to make girls like me look and feel good! However, you're not generally taught this can be a profitable business. I took the safe route and followed the path of going to college gaining a B. A. in Communications from Lehman College (CUNY) and pursuing my career in that field. At this very moment I realize, you do as you are taught or what you see subconsciously! As my mother did, I would work my 9-5 corporate jobs and do hair on the weekends or my days off. During the financial crisis of 2007-2008, I was unemployed and decided to attend cosmetology school. The passion was always there but I didn't connect it to my purpose back then. So I continued to work marketing and communication industry jobs getting laid off from each one (department restructuring, position eliminations, agency folding, etc). As I grew stronger in my faith I started to hear God clearer on what my purpose was and why I had to go through all the ups and downs in unstable professional environments. It was because with each lay off God was pushing me to my purpose but I wasn't listening. I was playing small with this gift he gave me and it wasn't until COVID that I was forced to listen and surrender. And that's how Society LaFemme was born!
Tell us about some of the challenges you face as an entrepreneur.
Some of the challenges I face as an entrepreneur is definitely self-educating myself on business as an entirety. I knew I was good at the creative stuff but learning how to legalize my business, filling out the right forms with the state, setting up a business bank account, changing the way I took payments so Uncle Sam won't come for me, preparing for my first tax season as a business owner. Then there is working with vendors in another country, learning how to price your product to make sure there's an adequate ROI, making sure I know the difference between gross and net profits, projecting sales goals, learning different strategies to increase the sales conversion rate from whatever platform you're marketing to your customer base on. It's all challenging, every day! But I'd choose this over and over before not honoring what my purpose is ever again!
